- Ponyboy gets jumped by socs (nickname for "social" who are kids on the rich west side of Tulsa) but is saved by his brothers, Sodapop and Darry, as well as his friends Two-Bit, Steve, Johnny, and Dallas
- After coming home late from the drive-in movie theater, Ponyboy gets into an argument with Darry which ends with Darry hitting him and Ponyboy running away, bringing Johnny with him.
- They are jumped by two socs in the park, Bob and Randy, and Johnny ends up killing Bob.
- Ponyboy and Johnny run away to Windrixville with Dallas's help and hide out in an old abandoned church.
- After a few days, Dallas brings them to a Dairy Queen but when they go back to the church, they realize it's on fire.
